What do the targets of the Renewable Energy Sources Act 2023 (EEG) mean for the German regions? How could the targets be regionalised? Where can companies looking for suitable locations to manufacture sustainable products finally find them? Five facts about the Energieatlas The German federal government has defined targets for the expansion of renewable energies. However, it is still unclear how new solar panels or wind power stations are to be distributed among the 400 districts and independent cities. The Energieatlas shows for the first time for each of the 400 regions how many power stations are already in place locally what progress has been made what a theoretically conceivable distribution across the regions could look like Wind power, photovoltaics, biomass and hydropower are analysed. Not all areas in a region are taken into account, but only those that are suitable for the construction of power stations. A study of this kind can only ever be based on statistically measurable data, not on “soft,” subjective factors such as local acceptance. Whether – and if so, how – the federal targets are allocated to the regions is a question for politicians. The study utilises a conceivable and mathematically possible distribution. Who speeds up the expansion of wind and solar power In January 2024, the Süddeutsche Zeitung shows which districts are ahead in the expansion of wind and solar power. Read article (in German) Where solar expansion is booming Following the December 2023 update of the Energieatlas data, the Süddeutsche Zeitung published an article focusing on solar power. Methodology (in German) Questions & answers What indicators does the study use? Which areas are suitable for expansion? Who is the atlas aimed at? To the FAQ (in German) SZ Nachhaltigkeitsgipfel Jens Hobohm, head of the study, discussed the results with economist Veronika Grimm and data journalist Marie Timcke, moderated by Lisa Nienhaus, head of the SZ department. To the event (in German) The Energieatlas is aimed at those responsible in the regions and local people, giving them an initial indication of what the EEG expansion targets could mean for their region in concrete terms. Those responsible in the economy also receive guidance on where there is or could be enough green electricity for the production of sustainable products in the future.
