How are things looking for Germany’s green tech industry? How ecologically and economically significant is green technology for Germany? Where is there still room for growth?

The green tech industry is multifaceted. Solar and wind technologies, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, recycling processes and much more. All of these sectors help combat the climate crisis and protect natural habitats. At the same time, through innovative technologies the industry continues to create economic opportunities and open up new markets.

The Green Tech Atlas provides a regular, comprehensive overview of the technological and economical trends in this cross-section industry. The last edition of the atlas was issued in 2021. Prognos has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (BMUV) to compile the seventh edition.

The Green Tech Atlas: the leading study on the German green tech industry

The Green Tech Atlas is a comprehensive publication that regularly provides an overview of the markets for environmental technologies and resource efficiency in Germany. It serves as the central source of information on the significance, status and future perspectives of green technologies in Germany.

The last edition was the Green Tech Atlas 2021. Prognos was commissioned with compiling the new edition, which will be officially released in spring 2025. As in the previous studies, the Green Tech Atlas 2025 will present current developments in the “Green tech industry - made in Germany” and illustrate the opportunities as well as the risks.

Our approach

We created a founded quantitative analysis of the green tech industry with the help of the Prognos envigos environmental economy model.

In the process, we examined the industry as a whole as well as the specifics of the individual leading markets:

  • The environmentally friendly generation, storage and delivery of energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Raw materials and material efficiency
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Recycling economy
  • Sustainable water economy
  • Sustainable agriculture and forestry

The recycling economy is more closely examined as a leading market, as well as the potential of the circular economy.

Further areas of focus were the global market and innovation: we analysed global demand, Germany’s position in the global market and the most important potential markets. In addition, we examined the state of innovation with a patent analysis.

The analysis will be supplemented with a comprehensive survey of businesses that will provide additional qualitative results. The goal of the analysis is to identify market trends up until now and growth potential, as well as the respective drivers and hurdles.
