With the “Research for Sustainability” (FONA) programme, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports research into climate protection and increased sustainability. Since the end of 2020, the FONA programme has been pursuing this strategy with the aim of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For this purpose, three strategic goals were formulated, to which research can make a decisive contribution: (1) Achieving climate goals, (2) Researching, protecting, and using habitats and natural resources, (3) as well as the further development of society and the economy.
The BMBF has now assigned three expert organisations the role of conducting accompanying research on the FONA strategy: the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI (lead), Prognos AG, and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). The aim of the research is to estimate the impact of the FONA strategy on the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals, to further develop the methods of impact assessment, and to promote the coordination among actors at strategy level, for example, through exchange and accompanying measures with the expert communities.
The three expert organisations possess the expertise in impact measurement and impact monitoring. On this basis, new methods and tools are developed to define the long-term impact of the FONA strategy on the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, existing methods will also be adapted.
Accompanying research uses different qualitative and quantitative as well as reactive and non-reactive data collection methods. Alongside the methods of impact analysis, web-based data collection methods, modelling, and future specific context and impact scenarios will be brought into play.
